Everett had been sitting in his small room within the apartment his grandfather had above his shop in the heart of New York City. He could hear the soft whine of the saws and drills Grandfather would use every once in a while to adjust one of his "art" as he called it. His little sister was no doubt sitting by him as he created his newest work, eyes wide in awe of the very delicate craftswork he did. He understood his grandfathers engineerig work had been extremely benifical, even since he left to live a civillian life, but Everett never understood why his five year old sister had such interest in machines of all things. He shut the book he had been reading and looked out of the window onto the street three stories below him. He watched the people of New York hustle and bustle, including (but not limited to) the kids his age or younger selling things probably to get by, the singular highly decorated carriage that Everett could only assume carried someone rich or very important, and the occasional prostitute that would strut by.
He sighed before moving away from the window and to the door of his room. He opened it softly and closed it just the same as he exited the sunlit room into a hall dark lit only by the dim electric lights. He moved two doors down and quietly opened the door, peering into a room lit the same as his, but with walls decorated with older maps that his little brother liked so much. He looked at the small bed in the room, and found his three year old little brother sleeping soundly with his thumb in his mouth and his body face down atop a collection of blankets. He smiled at the sight before closing the door as quietly as possible and heading downstairs to his grandfathers shop.
He opened the door to the noisy shop, a bell ringing on the hinge of the door that most people believed was a closet, and two heads looked up from a new piece of work with smiles on their faces. Annette bounded toward her older brother with a huge grin that Everett matched with a small one of his own.
"Evereeh!" The small girl with pigtails high on the back of her head hugged Everetts leg, she hadn't gotten quite good at finishing words with 't's and Everett laughed. He patted her head which increaced the small girls grip on his leg, cutting off his circulation just a little bit.
"Hey Annette," He smiled once again at her as she let go of his leg before turning to greet his elder with a small hello. It had been a year since his fathers accident, and around two since his mothers death, but he still had not gotten used to his father no longer greeting him the way grandfather did, but he supposed that would stop in time. After all, his own fifteenth birthday had been only a few weeks ago, and as soon as he could Everett had planned on joining the military. He had even applied and began to go to a special school where he could learn and start in the military a few ranks above a new recruit. He picked up his little sister and returned her to her sitting place on one of grandfathers worktables before stating he was going to the library, which was followed by a few 'can I come's from the tiny girl. His grandfather answered that with some sort of intriguing thing that she would miss if she went.
Everett smiled as he wished his family goodbye and walked out onto the busy street.

Esther had been sleeping when Red burst through her room door, and launched herself onto Esther's bed. Esther shot up from her sleep then tickled the little girl to tears, and back again. She had first moved in with the Finleys about a years ago. She was a year younger than the oldest boy, and immediately adopted all of the Finley kids as her siblings. Harvey was by far the cutest little mop of hair she'd ever seen -granted she had barely seen any young kids she would only describe as a 'mop of hair'- but that really doesn't matter. She was finally comfortable with where she was in life, and that was a foreign feeling. She had almost been away from a family for too long, almost forgotten what love felt like. She was thankful that she didn't slip away. That's not what she wanted to be.
She rolled off the bed into her wheelchair -bed-head and all- scooping up the pig-tailed brat as she did, weaved them through the mess that was her room, and wheeled them both down the stairs-converted-ramp.

After Everett had returned his book on advanced military history and gotten one very similar to the one he had already read but covering different points and opinions, he began the half hour trek home he had gotten used to doing at least three times a week. He had gotten used to the poverty around him in the city, and had even faced it when there were issues in finance, but it still made his heart hurt watching kids his age or younger on the side of the street, especially when he was so close to his own home. He dropped a few random coins he had in his pocket into a small cup a particularly small girl was holding. She smiled a broken thankful smile and he returned one before continuing walking only about a block before he opened the door to the small shop he called home.
Ah yes, there was also her. She with her deep blue eyes that had started to glow brightly, a very pleasant change from when he met her. Her dark hair was a tangled mass but the way she looked when she worked with Grandfather was enough to make him smile on its own. Everett didn't quite understand why, seeing as she wasn't what his father always said girls would be, proper and prim, but Esther DuCarmont was one of the prettiest girls he had the pleasure of meeting.
A pair of bright red pigtails came bounding toward him screetching in delight, and Everett met them by picking the small girl up much to her pleasure.
"Good Morning Esther," He checked the clock on the wall. 12: 30. "Well, good afternoon."

"Somebody is more of a sleepyhead than me." Esther replied in her sleep ridden voice while Harvey snuck from behind her and launched himself into Everett's arms.
"I do believe this naughty boy had intentions of sleeping all day." She smiled slightly towards Harvey, "I however did not unfortunately work must be done." She grumbled slightly.
"Find anything worthy of your time?"

"A few things actually, but yeah." He said placing the book he had gotten on a nearby table and leaning down to pick up the second of his little siblings, careful not to drop either one. Annette reached across to Harvey and pushed the hair from his eyes, much to the dismay of the three year old. He walked much closer to her, barely brushing her arm, but it was enough to send his stomach into knots. "What are you working on?"

"Something small." She was being curt with him and he knew it so she decided to elaborate, "A present of sorts."
She looked away if he saw her eyes he would be able to tell. It was supposed to be a surprise. Grandpa Finley gave her permission to use whatever tools she needed. She had spent all night locked in her room trying to make it perfect. She was lucky she had thought to hide it before she went to sleep. If Annette had seen it the girl would've thought it was a present for her, and while she enjoyed making toys for the youngest children she hadn't yet made anything for the eldest. She wanted Everette to know she cares, but she still wanted to make him something that was of higher quality. She had to hone her skills though and she realised the perfect opportunity came when she started making small toys for the youngest children.
The first thing the smallest Finleys wanted as soon as they woke up was food. They get grumpy when they're hingry. Very grumpy. So her and the smallest kids made sandwiches together. "We made lunch. Sandwiches; make everyone happy." Esther casually said rolling over to the table and bringing the plate with sandwiches over to Everette, " It's a pick and choose world. Choose your sandwich carefully."

"Wow." Everett practically drooled at the sandwiches, he had attempted to keep an elegant composure around her when they had first met, but as soon as he was around food all hopes of that keeping up had slipped out of his hands. He was, as his grandfather had called him, "a starving lion," and he could barely disagree.
He put down the older of his younger siblings as she smiled brightly. Her high, tiny voice giggled, "We made them for you!"
"For me?" He looked at his little sister as he heard a small voice of compliance from the arm he held Harvey in for a second then looked back at the sandwiches, extending his hand toward one that looked the least put together out of all of them. He thought if they had worked hard they would want the best of their labors, even though the one he had chosen still looked delicious.
He took a small bite and his heart melted along with the food. He didn't quite understand how a sandwich could be that good.

Esther won't pretend that she doesn't know all Finleys weaknesses; Food. She also won't deny that she still thinks the older of the kids doesn't like her. From his face right now though, she couldn't seen to find that she cared wether he liked her or not, because to see him happy was enough. She was a lot of things and in denial was definitely one of them. She told herself that she wanted him to like her because he's like a younger brother to her. That's a lie.
"I must be continuing with my project soon. I'll disappear for a few hours. Do yourself a favor and don't disturb me." She always managed to find the worst words to describe how she was feeling. She knew how he'd look at her, but could only find it in her to tell herself that he couldn't come in the room. She would rather he think she doesn't like him while she makes this present than discover that she was lieing to him about something. She had yet to discover how he would react to being lied to even for the most innocent reason.

"Oh... okay," Everett looked sadder than he wanted to, but he had been wanting to tell her about something he thought was funny that had happened on his way home from the library. Everett guessed she didn't want to hear and for some reason his heart lurched downwards. He put down his younger brother who had been rubbing his eyes and headed towards the stairs. He perhaps showed too much emotion in his voice, but he smiled lightly and looked at her. "Thanks for the food."
He continued to walk up the stairs and to his own door, in which he sat on his chair and stared (not really caring) at his book.
Why would that be a favor?
Everett concluded in his own mind that he had obviously done something to upset her and that he was an idiot for doing so. He curled laid his head in his arms resting on his desk and stared at the small ticking clock he had had on his desk since he was little.

Esther knew she crushed him in some way. He retreated to his room and she felt like a dick but she was trying to do something great for him. He just didn't know it yet. She rolled back up the stairs and got immediately to work. Melt here, push there, eat a chip or two continue with work. She finished near the end of the day, and had a sneaking suspicion that Everette was still in his room. She grasped it in her hands cold, hard, metal. The moon was out it was perfect. It was like her, but then that meant the sun was Everette because he was her opposite. She snuck into his room as best as one could with a wheelchair. She rolled over to his desk careful not to accidentally knock over any book piles. She put it on his desk. It looked perfect.
In the middle of his desk stood a metal sun. For he was her sun even if he didn't know it yet. She wasn't in denial any more.
Then she left to go catch up on some sleep. She suspected she would sleep until the next day but couldn't find it in herself to care. Now he knew that he meant something to her even if he didn't completly understand what that even was.

Everett stared at the metal sun a very pretty girl had just placed in front of his face. The moonlight glinted on its very shiny slightly curved face. He gently picked up the excellently crafted work and stared at it, his heart beating more than he thought it could. His face got warmer staring at the gentle shine and almost seamless connections He didn't understand, it was almost as pretty as its creator, why would she give this to him? He turned toward the door she had come through, and found it closed. He stared back at the sun, and then out his window up at the sky, where a bright full moon stared back at him.
He stared at the beautiful metal, examining everything he could about it, memorizing every last detail, all as he night slipped away and the sun started to rise again. He hadn't noticed he hadn't slept until the rising sun's color could be seen on his sun.
He looked at the clock on his desk and placed his sun next to it before standing up from his chair and heading downstairs where he had hoped she would be working. His cheeks pinked a little and his heart began to thump, twisting knots in his stomach formed that would usually tell him to run, but there was no way he could. He slowly walked down the stairs and his breathing became ragged at one sight of her slightly untidy hair that he had come to adore. He slowly approached her, not quite knowing what to say.
"I- um.. Esther?" He looked away and at the ground as she turned, fearing that is he were to look at her he might melt into the floor. He was aware of how silly he looked with his face a bright shade it had never been before, and cursed himself for it. He opened his mouth to speak, slowly looking at her rather concerned face. He locked his eyes with her deep blue ones, and his heart leaped quite a few miles away from him. "T-Thank you."

He looked like a tomato. It gave Esther some joy to know that she had done that. She stopped fixing Annette's broken toy for a few seconds, turned to Evertte and said, "You're welcome."
Like it was nothing he was almost purple now. That was when she first decided she liked the color red. "If anything happens to it let me know I'll fix it as quickly as I can."

"O-Okay..." He said, realizing he had still been wearing the same clothes he had been the day before, and he swiftly escaped to his room. He closed he door smiling slightly, half in self pity and half because of the small smile she had given him. He assumed that she must not be upset with him, and that alone brought a goofy smile to his face. He thought about something nice he could do for her, something to return his appreciation that would be more than a thank you. What he immdeiately thought of was too drastic and he would melt into a puddle and drip into the floor before he could, plus doing that to a lady at his age would be far too improper for his class.
What he decided he would do, however wasn't quite improper, but could express himself more than anything he could do, and he decided to do it before he left for his classes at his Academy, which at a glance of the clock was rather soon. He changed into the uniform they required and looked in his mirror, as if to modivate himself. He decided that he would contain his sudden changes into the colors of fruits and looked at the clock once again.
He left his room and once again and breathed in before returning downstairs to face what Everett had concidered the most beautful girl he had ever seen. He moved closer to where the girl was seriously working on a small toy. He hated to interrup her, but he hoped she would understand.
"Esther?" She turned her head at the sound of his voice, which quickly increaced his heart rate. "I'm sorry for suddenly dissappearing, that was rude of me..." He looked at her face with a small smile. "But either way," He slowly approached her, leaned down, and wrapped his arms around her, much to her shock. "Thank you, really."
His face had been much contained in color, but the stupid grin that formed on his face and the rapid pulse he had gotten still showed he had much work to do on concealing his emotions.

Esther was scared when he pulled away. Really scared. She didn't know if he did it out of pity or not but all that she knew was that he wasn't disgusted, and that made her really happy. He tried to leave without her seeing his face, but she wasn't having any of that.
"Everette," she called he looked at her startled, almost purple once again, and with wide eyes. She smiled a large smile teeth and all. "Have a nice day at the academy." She turned away and went back to work on the small toy.

"Thanks." He smiled relieved, for a second he thought she was going to tell her off, but the smile she gave him twisted his stomach into more knots than he could imagine possible. He opened the door to the streets of the city and with the same smile began his short walk to the Academy. He was almost certain that the day would be better than usual.
The academy was a rather large, bright building made for training people not quite old enough to be enrolled for the military. The graduants of the academy had the option of going in a few ranks above a foot soldier, and seeing as the academy itself was like a boot camp, did not require you to go through those trainings. Only the elite people who applied with high grades or a lot of money seemed to get in, and Everett happened to be one of those with extreme grades. After all, he believed he would have to work extremely hard to achieve what his late father had not.
The day went by quick, seeing as Everett was too stuck in his own head to really notice, and as soon as they were dismissed, he walked back home through the streets of shops, looking in the window every once and a while at things he though were interesting, or things that he thought Esther might enjoy but he could never really tell, and then continue walking.
